Pastoral Support

Pastoral Support

How do we look after the wellbeing of the children in our school?

At Shotley Community Primary School we are committed to developing the ‘whole child’. This includes not only the academic side of the school but also the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of our children.

We recognise that some children have extra emotional and social needs that need to be developed and nurtured and we aim to support them to be the best they can be.

We strive to create a caring and supportive environment where our children feel happy, secure, confident and valued in order to achieve their best. We offer pastoral support to pupils to ensure that our children feel safe and secure and know there are adults in school who they can talk to and who will listen to them.

Within our school we are lucky to have The Rainbow Room. This is a nurture room that children have access to throughout their school life. Mrs Southgate, our Family Liaison Officer offers a variety of support, from 1:1 sessions to small group work.

Our aim is to ensure that our children have access to guidance and support, where necessary, and to enable each child to fulfil their own potential academically, socially and emotionally.

Below is some of the provision we offer in the Rainbow Room:

  • Nurture/chat time
  • Time Out
  • Social Skills
  • Friendship Support
  • Lego Therapy (communication and teamwork)
  • Speech and Language (with support from speech and language therapists)
  • Anger Management
  • Feeling’s work
  • Focused 1:1 emotional support sessions
  • Drawing and talking sessions
